Warp Speed

Warp Speed and Deflector Dish?
The main deflector dish on a ship has the purpose of pushing small objects out of the vessel's path while traveling at faster than light speed. Otherwise, even a particle of space dust would strike the ship with the force of a meteor. So, that's fine if the ship is traveling forward. But when the ship is traveling at warp in reverse (as it did in several episodes), what's protecting the ship? There is no deflector dish in the aft section. Apparently just shields are not enough. Theoretically, the vessel should be able to travel in any direction, not just forward, at warp. What about ships like Reliant and Grissom that had no deflector dishes? Ooops? Thoughts?
Simple - the writers and production crew were more concerned with telling a good story than with nailing down every tiny, niggling aspect of continuity for the satisfaction of obsessive fanboys. Therefore, not every little technical detail is going to fall into line.
