Job outlook for scuba instructors or divemasters?
What is the job outlook, salary, etc. for a scuba instructor and/or divemaster? I'm just now getting into scuba diving, working on getting my Open Water cert, but I plan to get my Advanced Open Water cert next spring and Rescue Diver in the summer, and I want to keep moving up the ladder. I'm curious whether I could make a career out of this though, so any info, tips, advice, etc. on how much you can make doing this professionally would be greatly appreciated!
And yes, I'm open to doing it as a career not just as an instructor but maybe as an underwater photographer, research diver, etc.
Job outlook is good, there are positions out there in many areas of the world but there's also stiff competition for them. Just having an Instructor's cert is NOT going to guarantee that you land a job. Your country of origin could be a liability as your nationality could be a hindrance in landing that dream job. Visas and local work permits may be limited to those of your nationality for instance if you plan on working in a foreign country. Another can be the languages you speak. Yep...it's a good idea to have more than one language under your belt as it increases your hiring potential. I was offered a job last week in Egypt solely on the basis that besides being fluent in English, I'm moderately fluent in French.
Having taken a resort operations course will also be a plus or for that matter, any training in the hospitality or travel industry would be a bonus.
Wages? It's all going to depend on where you work. Your wage will be geared toward the local cost of living. Tips will usually go a long way here and can make or break you.
FYI, just being an instructor will not mean that you're qualified as a photg , cinematographer or research diver. You still require additional training in the area of work that you plan on doing. Your cert will just mean that you can train divers proficiently and meet the guidelines of the certifying agency you're with.
