The importance of decompression to deep sea divers?
I'm writing a speech on deep-sea diving for part of an english project (writing an essay or presentation on a chosen hobby). I've described all about the preparation and important details, and a little about decompression illness, but what exactly is the importance of decompression to deep-sea divers? If you could descibe/explain a bit that would be v.helpful. Thanks!
I can help you with this question! I have an advanced open water scuba diving certification, I've been diving since 1980 & I have made over 100 different types of dives.
Knowing how to avoid decompression illness is extremely important & lack of knowledge can easily result in death to the diver.
Decompression is extremely important to divers who dive deep whether it's in salt water or freshwater. It becomes more important the deeper the dive is. Most divers don't have to worry about decompression until they start diving depths over 60 feet.
Decompression diving is associated with avoiding the decompression illness commonly refered as the "BENDS." If you don't decompress on a deep dive while you're ascending back to the surface you'll will get the bends & death can occur & the bends are extremely painful.
Your bloodstream has nitrogen in it & when you dive deep; these nitrogen bubbles expand in your bloodstream. If you ascend too quickly; you don't allow these bubbles to decrease back to their normal size & they block your circulation & you'll find it impossible to bend anywhere---such at your knees & elbows---causing extreme pain {this is decompression illness}.
This blocking of circulation due to the enlargement of nitrogen bubbles in your bloodstream can lead to death. As a diver, you only have a couple of options to resolve the issue. One, you should be diving with a buddy & your buddy should be aware of your illness.
Two, if possible, return to a deeper depth until your illness goes away & then ascend slowly so your nitrogen bubbles shrink back to their normal size & then surface.
If this is impossible some dive areas have decompression chambers that they place a diver & in begin a simulation. This simulation returns a diver back to a depth where the nitrogen bubbles can shrink back to normal & you'll get rid of the bends.
Most importantly, a diver must study his or her's dive charts that are designed to prevent decompression illness. These dive charts tell a diver how long he or she can dive at a certain depth without having to decompress & also if cecompression is necessary the charts; with a certain formula will tell the diver at what depth they must wait, for a period of time before surfacing; sometimes there can be more then one decompression stop. This will prevent the diver from getting the bends.
If you interested in finding out more then find a scuba diving shop in your area that certifies divers. You can always buy the book for diving certification & get a reference that tells you everything. It's a paperback & is inexpensive.
