What causes oil pressure gauge to go down besides low oil?
In question is my 1991 Ford Explorer. The oil pressure gauge, in the two years I've owned the car, has never gone more than 1/8 into the "normal" range (in fact, I don't recall noticing it move at all before we had some non-related repairs made, maybe that made me more aware?). However, when I was driving it home two nights ago on the freeway, it dropped down to the red zone. I checked the oil level, which was a bit low, so I had an oil change done (which I was due for by months, but not by miles). The reading is only slightly above what it was before, and still dips into the red zone when I accelerate. I checked the oil level just in case they did something funny at Jiffy Lube, but the level is fine now.
What else could my problem be?
Oil pump has gone bad or bad oil pressure sensor.
There's a pump in your engine that pumps the oil so that it circulates into the necessary areas of the engine.
This would be the most likely reason for truly low oil pressure.
However I would check the oil pressure sensor, just to be sure that's not giving a faulty reading. The oil pressure sensor is something you can typically replace yourself if your are slightly mechanically inclined. (ie know lefty loosey, righty tighty LOL) The oil pressure sensor is typically just screwed into the block some where. Replacement is typically a simple remove and replace with a set of wrenches.
Oil pump is much more difficult to replace.
Oh and while impeachgwb below's recommendation of using higher viscosity oil might bring up oil pressure, it's like injecting cholestrol into your veins to bring up your blood pressure. Not a good idea!
